Why use gate aids?
-Posture
-Support for weakness
-Structure
-Balance (increases base of support)
What side do gait aids go?
Opposite of affected side (on good side)
Ambulation
-mobility activity
-ex. go for a walk
Gait Training
Teach them how to walk
2 wheeled walker
-most support of all devices
-for pts. who are unstable
4 wheeled walker
-for pts. who are more stable
-good for outside
-require proper dexterity & cognition
Fitting gait aids
-fit to wrist crease (ulnar styloid process)
-elbows at 20 degrees bent
Hemi walker
cant use one of their hands
elevated walker
cant load through their wrists
reverse walker
-for posture
-more open to the environment
-used a lot with kids
knee walker
-faster to get around when you cant walk on one foot
Gutter
if a pt. cant put weight through 1 wrist
Crutches
-faster to get around
-require upper body strength & balance
- does NOT touch armpit
Fitting Crutches
- 3 fingers under armpit
- handgrip at wrist
- crutches 45 degrees out, 6 inches in front
Forearm/Lofstrand/Canadian Crutches
- used for a long term condition
- have to have good trunk control
