What is Vertical Focus?
Oral focus either in:
nose—females tends to focus up here.
mouth—best quality will focus here
throat—most harmful creates vocal fry
What is horizontal focus?
Speaking in the front of the mouth or back of the throat.
What two common disorders affect the voice?
- Acid reflux
2. Vocal hypertension
What can one do to deal with acid reflux?
Avoid caffeine because it’s a diuretic and takes water out of your system.
Milk will thicken the vocal folds making it difficult to speak creating hoarseness.
If you have to have caffeine, drink it alongside water.
Do not eat 3-4 hours before bed…no proteins at night.
Use lemon drops/hard candy instead of mints.
Watch the way you sleep: on the back with head propped is best.
Environmental factors to monitor:
Humidity—40-50% is ideal for speaking.
Noise—don’t try and compete with noise
Dust—change air filters in house regularly.
Altitude—drink a lot of water when on an airplane
How to know if I’m hydrated:
“Pee pale speak well.” Drink 10-12 glasses/day
Personal factors to monitor
Diet, Hydration Warm up/down Use normal speaking voice when preaching Rest Regular exercise Avoid some General Medications (NyQuil) Wash hands frequently Vocalized pauses Vocal naps Avoid yelling
What are two problematic voice contexts?
Counseling and the telephone (throaty voice)
