Week 13: Qualitative Thematical Analysis Flashcards
1
Q
What is thematical analysis?
A
A foundational method for qualitative analysis, with aims to develop a description of patterns, capturing key info about the research question
2
Q
What is reflexivity in thematical analysis?
A
Involves the practical reflection of your role as a researcher, research practice and role within the research
3
Q
What is the 6 stage process?
A
- familiarise yourself with the dateset
- coding
- generating initial themes
- developing and reviewing themes
- refining, defining and naming themes
- write up
4
Q
What do you do when familiarising yourself with the data set?
A
- immersing yourself in the content of the dataset
- re-reading the data- transcripts of the interviews
- making notes or discussing the data
5
Q
What is done in the coding stage?
A
- identify segments of data that appear interesting, relevant or meaningful to the research question
- applies code lavels which are analytically meaningful descriptions of each part
- codes the entire dataset with labels/segements
6
Q
What is involved in generating initial themes ?
A
- identifying patterned meaning across dataset
- compile clusters of codes that share a core idea or answer research question
- active process constructed by researcher and dataset
- allocate coding labels to candidate themes
7
Q
What is involved in developing and reviewing themes?
A
- assess the initial fit of your candidate themes to the data
- review full dataset code labels and candidate themes
- make changes, remove themes, or modify themes
- consider relationship between themes and existing knowledge
- think about core focus of each theme and relate to central organising concept
8
Q
What is involved in refining, defining and naming themes?
A
- ensuring each theme is strong and has a clear concept
- what does the story tell us?
- write a brief synopsis
9
Q
What is involved in the write up?
A
- formally write themeatical analysis
- use IMRAD reporting style
