Mr I has been admitted to your ward with generalised oedema and is dyspnoeic. He is ordered an initial dose of intravenous frusemide and then he is to commence oral frusemide bd.

What is the intended action of frusemide?
Treats fluid retention (oedema) in people with congestive heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disorder such as nephrotic syndrome
Is also a loop diuretic that prevents your body from absorbing too much salt, allowing salts to pass in to urine
What is the mechanism of action by which frusemide works?
Inhibits the synthesis of NKCC2, in the loop of Henley
What are commonly reported adverse effects associated with frusemide?
Bleeding and or haemorrhage, excessive bleeding from minor cuts, wounds, brushing teeth or menstrual period, nosebleeds, easily bruised
