Psychopathology (mental illness) is often seen as
a failure of
adaptation to the environment (maladaptive behaviour)
Diagnosis:
- The art or act of identifying a disease from its signs and symptoms
DSM
DSM has grown in scope to become a major system of classification
and diagnosis of mental disorders.
DSM ONLY focuses on
signs and symptoms, not on underlying
causes or explanations which are often significant to individuals and
also to treatment.
Mental disorder defense
- Legal defense proposing that people shouldn’t be held legally responsible for
their actions if they weren’t of “sound mind” when committing them
Anxiety disorders
A cluster of mental disorders involving excessive anxiety
* What separates anxiety disorders from other forms of anxiety is a
combination of an unjustifiable degree, duration, and source of
anxiety.
AD symptoms
Feel tense, on edge, tired, irritable, have difficulty
concentrating/sleeping.
* Symptoms - trembling, palpitations, sweating, dizziness, nausea,
diarrhea, frequent urination
OCD
- Distressing, maladaptive focus on details and control, perfectionist-like
Agoraphobia:
- Fear of being in a place or situation from which escape is difficult or
embarrassing, or in which help is unavailable in the event of a panic
attack
