What do food labels do?
They protect public health
What must food labels include?
The food name, Lot identification, name and business address of supplier, advisory statements, ingredients list, percentage labelling, date marking, nutrition information, directions of use and storage, country of origin , weight/measure of contents
What is the purpose of additional information?
Can assist cutomers to make choices and help products sell
What are some typical non-compulsory include?
Serving suggestions, barcodes, health star rating
What information must NOT be on the label?
False or misleading information, claims that it can cure disease, nutrition comparison to other foods, claims that it has weight loss properties
What foods dont require labelling?
Unpackaged foods, foods made and packages where they are sold, food packaged in front of customers, fruits and vegetables in see-through packaging, home-delivered food, individual packages in a larger package if it has a label
What is a nutrient content claim?
A claim about the contents of a particular nutrient in a food e.g. high or low amounts
What is a health claim?
Refers to a relataionship between a food and a health benefit
What is a general level health claim?
Refer to benefits that a substance can have on health not about serious diseases
What is a high level health claim?
Refers to nutrient and how it can affect a serious disease or indicator of a serious disease
What is the purpose of nutrient and health claims?
They assist customers to make choices and create more sales
How does accurate labelling increase food safety?
Accurate labels include how to store and prepare food properly, stopping any mispreparation and food poisoning
How does accurate labelling increase guidance?
Allows people to be eduacted and with the provided information make their own choice, with place of origin, nutrition, etc
What is the Halo effect?
The overestimation of how healthy a food item might be based on one indicator or claim
