What is the leading cause of death in the US?
drug overdoses (most related to opioids)
What does the term opioid refer to?
Any substance that activates the muopioid receptor (can be naturally occurring, semi-synthetic and synthetic)
What plant are opioids derived from?
opium… I think this is the poppy plant but we can check
What drug is semi synthetic and derived from opium?
heroin
What are the characteristics of heroin?
short half life, rapid onset of action and is highly potent. Highly addictive.
Is opioid withdrawal lethal?
No
What can poor treatment of opioid withdrawal cause?
may result in patients leaving treatment early, relapsing and dying.
What are some traits of opioid intoxification?
constricted pupils, dry mouth, hyper alert with low does, decreased alertness with increased dose, pale skin, depressed respirations, euphoria
What are the long term effects of opioid misuse?
weight loss, malnutrition, poor hygiene, constipation, urinary hesitancy
What are the signs of opioid withdrawal?
tachycardia, hot and cold sweats, dysphoria, insomnia, bone, joint and muscle pain, dilated pupils, runny nose or tearing, GI upset, agitation, tremulousness, yawning, piloerection, drug craving
What is in suboxone?
it includes both buprenorphine (opioid partial agonist) and naloxone (opioid antagonist)
What is the primary medication used for opioid withdrawal?
suboxone
What can suboxone also be used for?
longer term maintenance treatment for opioid use disorders
What drug is both a weak mu-opioid receptor agonist AND has SNRI properties?
Tramadol
How many half lives does it take for a drug to leave the body?
5 half lives
