Week 12 Flashcards
What is linguistics?
- Linguistics is the study of organizing principles of language
- The field of linguistics seeks to explore how language works
- Linguistics is focused on language in general - rather than specific
- Speech pathologists study linguistics because it provides us with foundational understandings of how language is structured and functions
Reference and sense
- Reference: Words denote something, words refer to a particular entity or object
Sense: Words have relationships, word meanings are derived from a sense relationship
Whorfian Hypothesis?
- The Whorfian Hypothesis, also known as Linguistic Relativity, is the idea that the language we speak influences the way we think and perceive the world. It suggests that the structure and vocabulary of a language can shape or limit a person’s understanding of concepts, reality, and experiences.
Allomorphs?
Allomorphs are different forms or variations of the same morpheme (e.g., “-s,” “-es,” and “-en” for plural forms), depending on how they fit into different words.
Syllables, Onset and Rhyme
- Syllables are the chunks or beats in a word (e.g., “but-ter-fly” has three syllables).
- Onset is the consonant(s) that come before the vowel in a syllable (e.g., the b in “bat”).
Rhyme (or rime) is the part of the syllable that includes the vowel and any consonants that follow (e.g., the at in “bat”).
How can Chat GPT be harmful when used in Speech Pathology Practice?
However, using CHATGPT can also be harmful, as it is limited to specific information, lack of emotions and subject to misinformation. In speech pathology practice, this can be harmful to patients as it may encourage use of incorrect information, enforce an emotionally unconnected environment that prevents a mutual understanding or due to Chat GPT not being a physical body, cannot direct activities such as swallowing assessments (Oranga, 2023).
Benefits/negatives of Chat GPT
Artificial intelligence (AI) can be beneficial and disadvantageous in speech pathology practice and cannot be solely relied upon. Dependent on the information input, AI can misinterpret leading to misunderstanding and lacks emotional connection needed in interpersonal contact, unable to empathize and relate to others. If emotional issues were run through an AI generator, it prevents a mutual understanding from being formed due to a computerized and callous response that creates a feeling of discomfort. Concurrently, AI is available and accessible to anyone, creating a lack in privacy and consent and is unethical to expose personal information to a web platform
What can cause language loss?
Colonization, Emigration, Globalization, power, money, less need for the language in favor of another
What can cause language revitalization?
Education, Government involvement and policies, technology and media, intergenerational transmission
Impact of language revitalization/loss on identity?
Encouraged to embrace culture at home, behavioral learning to be part of a group, connection to heritage, were shamed of their culture, pressure to not speak their language
