What is Clinical Linguistics?
The application of linguistic concepts and theories about how language is organized. It is concerned with language in general rather than specific languages. Speech pathologists apply clinical linguistics to the study of language disorders
What is Sociolinguistics?
The study of the social aspects of language. It is interested in the way language serves and is shaped by the social nature of humans. This includes the effect of social norms, social expectations and societal structures on language
What is Psycholinguistics?
Concerned with the psychology of language. This field of study is interested in the way the brain processes and represents language that enable humans to acquire, comprehend and use language
What is Linguistics?
- The study of linguistics seeks to explore how language works
- Focused on language in general rather than specific languages
- SLT - it provides us with foundational understanding of how language is structured and its function
Why do SP need to understand how linguistics work?
- Need to understand language to support communication issues
- Need to be better with cultural linguistics - Use all 3 types to have a wholistically framework to think about language
How many languages are there ?
- 500 languages approx.
- 350 million native English speakers, Chinese (Cantonese, Hokkien and Mandarin) have over a billion
Hindi - 300 million first, 100 million second
Spanish - 200 million
European - 1 million language users
What are the differences between languages and why do we use them?
All languages have sets of speech sounds, some words may differ depending on things within their culture (e.g. smartphones, some may have it some may not)
Sets us apart as a species - linguistics
Highly social, way we build social relationships
Marker of identity
What are the subsystems of language?
Phonetics, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, pragmatics
What is phonetics?
How speech sounds are produces, physical characteristics of speech sounds
What is phonology?
The sounds of a particular language, how different languages have different sounds
What is morphology?
The building blocks or internal structures of words, including prefixes and suffixes
What is Semantics?
The meaning of words, sentences and sayings
What is syntax?
The way words are combined to produce phrases and sentences
What is Pragmatics?
The way in which language is used in context and in discourse
What are the three aspects of words?
Meaning:
Form: What words or sentences look like
Function: The interpretation of a words
