Organizational leadership
The act of influencing employees from various teams, units, and other groups to achieve a common purpose.
Challenges with leadership:
- Establishing a common purpose
* Orchestrating the efforts of many
Three control mechanisms:
- Output
- Behavior
- Organizational behavior
Implications of output control mechanism
- Easiest to implement
- May give rise to unethical behavior
- Not as objective
- not future-oriented.
Implications of behavior control mechanism
- Costly
* Difficult to implement everywhere/all the time.
Implications of organizational behavior
- Difficult to establish and change
- Effective once established
- Preserves individual autonomy.

Benefits of goal-setting
Greater sense of purpose and meaning increase task interest and pride in performance
Characteristics of goals
- Attainable
- People must be committed
- Feedback
- Less complex tasks
Distributive justice
What decisions; equality vs. equity
Procedural justice
How decisions are made; consistent, unbiased, representative, appeals process
Define homophily
Rating similar people higher
Define halo effect
Rating high-status people higher
Define salience effect
Rating people who don’t fit a stereotype lower
