What is digital divide?
Globalization of the internet is creating a seperation between those who have access to this global network and those who do not.
What are the three stages of digital divide?
- Economic divide
- usability divide (digital illiteracy)
- Empowerment divide (using it to contribute)
What are ethics?
Set of moral principles / the principles of conduct governing and individual or a group.
What are two meanings of ethics in IS?
- Ethical consequences of IT developments;
- Ethical aspects of IS itself
What are three ways to implement ethics?
- A professional code of conduct such as ACM
- Acceptable use policy
- Law
What is a professional code of conduct?
Behavioral rules and policies you have to adhere in a professional setting, you will sign a document stating you agree with the policies stated and enforced by an employer
What is an acceptable use policy?
a document stipulating constraints and practices that a user must agree to for access to a corporate network or the Internet.
What is intellectual property?
Property derived from the work of the mind or intellect. Protected by laws to protect the tangible results of an idea.

- Trademark

- Digital millenium copyright act (DMCA)
What is a copyright??
Protection to creative works (music, books, programs) of an author. The author can decide what can be done with their work. They have the right to sell their copyright (first doctrine)
What is a trademark?
Protection of a work, phrase, logo or sound that identifies a source of goods/services
What is a patent?
Protection for someone who invesnts a new product or service. Must be original, non-obvious and useful.
What is the digital millenium copyright act?
Extenson of copyright law to take into account digital technologies
What is anti-circumvention?
Part of the DMCA. People are not allowed to use digital technologies in a way that is not allowed by the developers
What is safe-harbor provision?
Part of the DMCA. Immunity to platforms for copyright infrigment if they delete the content immediately.
What is personable identifiable information PII ?
Information about a person that can be used to identify that person (name, social security)
What is GDPR?
Data protection for PII.
EU: Privacy is a right (normative approach)
US: balances interest of consumers and companies (pragmatic)
What is Non-Obvious Relationship Awareness (NORA)?
Process of collecting large quantities of a variety of information and then combining it to create profiles of individuals. First commercialized in casino’s to identify cheaters. Can bring advantages, but do infringe privacy
What is the golden rule in ethics?
Do not do something to someone that you don’t want to happen against you
What is Kant’s view on ethics?
If an action is not right for everyone to take, it is not right for anyone
What is descartes view on ethics?
If an action cant be taken repeatedly, it should not be taken
Wat is the utilitarian principle?
Take the action that achieves the highest value
What is the process of ethical analysis?
- Identify and describe the facts
- Define the conflict and the values involved
- Identify stakeholders
- Identify the options
- Identify the potential consequences of the options
What is Habermas’ pyramid of communication?
There are three levels of communications to solve a communication problem. THe top one is success -> you discuss the issue and come to an agreement. The middle layer is failure. You disagree and discuss, might lead to success or to discourse. Bottom layer is discourse. Here you should discuss why there is a communication problem and the underlying norms and values. You aim to set new collaborative norms and values.
