Week 1 Flashcards
What is the general definition of IS?
IS encompasses combinations and interrelations of data, hardware, software, people and processes to analyze and distribute data.
What is Piccoli’s definition of IS?
Formal, sociotechnical organizational systems designed to collect, process, store and distribute information.
–> Focus on the social/people side
What two main components are there in Piccoli’s definition and what do they encompass?
Social system and Technical Sytem.
Social: (business) structure and people
Technical: technology & Process
All components are interconnected
What are three types of change according to Piccoli?
- Automate (remove the human from the process)
- Informate (how to better interpret data (includes humans)
- Transformate (goes beyond, affect business strucutre)
What is the difference between IS focused and managerial focused view (aspectial focused)
IS: Focusses on all the seperate parts of an information system.
Managerial: Sees IS as an aspect of the busines, does not focus on the seperate parts of the IS.
What are the IS compontents?
- Data
- Hardware
- Software
- People
- Process
What is Language Action Perspective (LAP)?
An informtation system is a system in which the communication process is central.
As communication is human-focused, IS is more than just computers. Technology is only a tool to communicate.
The first purpose of communication is coordinating activies.
The second purpose of communication is creating relationships.
–> Addition to socio-technical view.
What are the main points of the IM Cube by Rick Maes?
- IT is not only operational support services, look at it from a holistic approach
- There is a layer in between business operations and IT services: Information demand which links the two together.
- IM is not only important on operational level, it should be used for strategic and tactical decisionmaking.
- IT strategy should be alligned with business strategy
- Tactical layer focus on the design of IT processes, information provision and IT services.
What is meant by the fate of the mediator?
IM could become redundant as it is the middle man between business and IT. IT becomes more business minded and business becomes more IT savvy.
-> unlikely to happen though.
What is digital transformation?
It is not digitisation.
It is the use of new technologies to enable business improvements to create competitive advantage.
What are the tasks of the CIO?
Demand: Expressing demands from the business; what they need from IT/IM
Supply: Spokesman of IT; Translate what business wants into IT language
What are the differences between a CIO and CDO?
CIO: Between business and IT.
CDO: Between all the departments using IT. More on demand side. Focusses on new services, hiring and training, digital evangelist.
