What is perceived susceptibility?
Belief about getting a disease or condition
What is perceived severity?
Belief about the seriousness of the condition, or leaving it untreated and it’s consequences
What is perceived benefits?
Belief about the potential positive aspects of a health action
What is perceived barriers?
Belief about the potential negative aspects of a particular health action
What are cues to action?
Factors which trigger action
What is self-efficacy?
Belief that one can achieve the behaviour required to execute the outcome
What does “Illness behaviour” refer to?
‘The manner in which people differentially perceive, evaluate and respond to symptoms.’
What are the demographic variables that affect the health belief model?
Class, gender, age etc.
What are the psychological characteristics that affect the health belief model?
Personality, peer group pressure etc.
What is the health belief model?
A theoretical model concerned with health decision-making predicting that a specific health behaviour is more or less likely based on an individual’s perceptions of disease severity and personal susceptibility to the disease combined with perceived benefits and barriers to that behaviour
