Week 10 - Cultural Consecration (Critics & Awards) Flashcards
How do critics create artistic value?
by valuing specific artworks, they are also approving the genre and are saying that the genre is capable of value and high standards
Low cultural capital can be elevated to high cultural capital through criticism
-demonstrated by pop music and film
Film as high art
-film used to be considered low art
-nature of reviews used to be different and focused on if you’d enjoy it
-high culture reviews emerged in the 60s with french criticism centered around arteur theory – then spread to the US and critics began searching fot meaning and themes
Arteur theory
-based on the premise that the director is te author of the film
-views art as the expression of an individual soul (artistic ideology), however this was hard to establish with film because it’s very collaborative
-artuer theory addressed this bysaying the director was the primary creator
similar thing with music – critics began analyzing albums and their themes
Canonization
a process where it requires works from people to determine what is high cultural capital
Critics establish canon
-critics for films and music would create canonical lists of great films and albums
e.g. AFI 100 most influential films of the 20th century
What can occur if a work is canonized?
the genre itself can be canonized as not just entertainment but art
What do awards imply?
implies that things are capable of being art and achieving cultural capital
What does our reaction to works deemed low status being awarded signal?
*works that typcially have low status may aspire to be high form throgu awards
-our reaction signals that we view certain works as incapable fo being high art
e.g. pornopraphy
How do awards follow a romantic ideology?
by giving awards to indivudals (e.g. best director, best actor), supports that art is the expression of a person’s soul
there are exceptions, such as the MTV awards for best scene– however these don’t aspire to be cultural capital
How can cultural capital be reinforced when no award is given?
-implies that none of the works were good enough to meet the high standards for the artistic field
-insulting to the artists
