Week 10 - Being a Designer Flashcards
What is creativity
Generation of new ideas either to look at existing problems differently or seeing new opportunities
What is innovation
Successful exploitation of new ideas.
What is design?
What links creativity and innovation. Shaping ideas to be practical, attractive business propositions.
What are the three characteristics of engineering design?
A purposeful activity
Aimed at the satisfaction of human needs
Based on technological factors
What are the four phases of the double diamond process model?
- Discover - exploratory phase - Wide ideas and thoughts…
- Define - Focussing phase - Brining ideas together…
- Develop - Prototyping phase - Building, assessing, revising ideas…
- Deliver - Launching phase - testing, product support…
What is the SAFE process model?
Simple
Appropriate
Functional
Economical
What are emergent properties?
Properties of a system that the parts do not have themselves.
What are well defined problems?
Problems where the solver had all the required information to solve the problem.
What is an ill defined problem?
A problem where the solver has to help define the problem.
What are the four required types of information required to solve a problem?
Initial state of the problem
Goal state
Legal Operators
The operator restrictions
“The towers of Hanoi. What is the smallest number of moves to move all the discs from the first to the last peg? How do I prove the answer is correct?”
This problem is
a) well defined
b) ill defined
Well defined - initial and goal state, we know the rules (restrictions) and there are no legal operators
“How should this circuit board be laid out to optimise cost / performance?”
This problem is:
a) well defined
b) ill defined
Ill defined - goal state is not known
If a problem has many variable solutions, or no hard and fast right answer, it is likely to be
a) well defined
b) ill defined
ill defined
Does difficulty in solving a problem affect it’s well-definedness?
No. A problem can be well defined but near impossibly to solve.
