Week 10 Flashcards

1
Q

Does Cross-linguistic Semantic priming occur?

A

Yes, BUT there is an asymmetical effect, L1 primes L2 but L2 doesn’t prime L1 (this is b/c there are more/stronger connections in L1)

Q

“False Friends”

A

Homographs: coin/ coin(corner)
Homophones: pool/ poule(chicken)
Some (mixed/weak) evidence they interfere with Lexical Decision Task

Q

Is inhibition dependent on Fluency??

A

No, there is no proficiency effect! In a non-restrictive context all were more likely to look at false friend than in a restrictive context.

Q

When does semantic info become available?
Real life
TRACE
COHORT

A

RL: Observed N400 begins early when primed, 200ms after onset for auditory, 300ms for visual. Available early, but immediately???
T: predicts immediately, throughout process
C: predicts after initial cohort activation then throughout

Q

Is there an advantage for Lexical access of ambiguous words?

A

There are different types:
Yes faster recognition for polysemous (diff. but related meanings ex blind)
No disadvantage for homonymous (No relation between meanings ex. dog vs tree bark)
