Superior (cranial)
Towards the head e.g. the hand is superior to the foot
Inferior (caudal)
Below the superior e.g. the foot is inferior to the hand
Anterior (ventral)
The front of the body e.g. the knee cap is on the anterior side of the leg
Posterior (dorsal)
The back of the body e.g. the shoulder blades are on the posterior side of the body
Medial
Towards the midline (towards the belly button) e.g. the chest is medial to the arm
Lateral
Away from the midline (outwards) e.g. the arms are lateral to the chest
Intermediate
In-between e.g. the heart is intermediate to the lungs
Proximal
Closer to the body (only used with limbs) e.g. the proximal joint in the fingers is closest to the palm
Distal
Further from body (only use with limbs) e.g. the distal joint in the fingers is furthest away from the palm
Superficial (external)
Located more externally e.g. skin is superficial
Deep (internal)
Located internally e.g. the heart is deep
Saggital plane
Vertical. Divides body into left and right sides.
Frontal/coronal plane
Vertical. Divides body into an anterior (front) and posterior (back) side.
Transverse plane
Horizontal. Divides the body into superior and inferior.
