Week 1 Lecture: Introduction to Botany Flashcards
What are the characteristics of life?
- Organization
- Metabolism
- Growth and Development
- Maintaining Homeostasis
- Reproduction
- Ability to change over time
What is the organization of living things?
- Cell
- Tissue
- Organ
- Organ System
- Organism
An intellectual tool that most scientists used to arrive at “truth” in a certain phenomenon.
Scientific Method
The Scientific Method consists of:
- Observation
- Question
- Hypothesis
- Results
- Conclusion
The starting point of the scientific method. They are sensory experiences that allow scientists to collect data on the natural world.
Observation
It is what the scientists in a scientific method aim to answer.
Question
A statement about a specific research question, and it outlines the expected result of the experiment.
Hypothesis
The outcome or findings obtained from conducting an experiment to test hypotheses or research questions
Results
A statement based on experimental measurements and observations. It includes a summary of the results, whether or not the hypothesis was supported, the significance of the study, and future research.
Conclusion
It must have a control that should not be given the tested variable. The treatments can allow you to control the factors.
Experiments
___ is the component that changes due to experimental variable.
Dependent variable
___ is the factor that can be manipulated
Experimental variable
Characteristics of Plants:
- Multicellular organisms made up of eukaryotic
cells.
2 . Have mul tiple pigments with multiple functions. - Use water, and properties of water in unique
ways.
4 . Use anabolic metabolism to manufacture every mole cule needed for growth and produce virtually no waste. - Have cell walls are nonliving matrices outside the plant cell membrane that house and/or perform a variety of functions
- Non-motile
- Life cycle alternates between a haploid gametophyte stage and a diploid sporophyte stage.
