Week 1 - General Organisation of the Head and Neck Flashcards
What is the role of the buccinator muscle in chewing?
Plays a role in keeping the cheeks taut, especially during chewing, to prevent food collecting in the oral vestibule (the horse-shoe shaped space between the teeth and cheek/lips)
State the four muscles of mastication.
- Temporalis
- Masseter
- Medial pterygoid
- Lateral pterygoid
While examining a patient you ask them to raise their eyebrows in order to wrinkle their brow. Which muscle does this?
Frontalis - anterior portion of the occipitofrontalis - raises the eyebrows
What branch of the facial nerve innervates the frontalis?
Temporal
State the five branches of the facial nerve.
- Temporal
- Zygomatic
- Buccal
- Marginal mandibular
- Cervical
What is the difference in function of the orbital and palpebral parts of orbicularis oculi?
The orbital part of orbicularis oculi acts to squeeze the eye tightly shut. The palpebral part gently closes the eyelid - as when sleeping
Which muscles does the posterior auricular branch of the facial nerve supply?
- Muscle behind the ear
2. Occipitalis muscle
Where does the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve carry sensory information from?
From the lower part of the face and jaw
Which muscles does the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve supply?
- All muscles of mastication - masseter, lateral and medial pterygoids, temporalis
- Muscles lying deeper in the neck under the jaw - anterior belly of digastric and the mylohyoid
Which layer of the scalp do the main blood vessels of the scalp run in?
The dense connective tissue layer - 2nd layer
State all the muscle derivatives of the fourth pharyngeal arch.
- Cricothyroid
- Levator palatini
- Constrictors of the pharynx
State the muscle derivatives of the sixth pharyngeal arch.
Intrinsic muscles of the larynx
