Week 1-Food Guidance Systems Flashcards
ADG
Australian Dietary Guidelines
NRV
Nutrient Reference value
Include:EAR, RDI, AI, UL, SDT’s, AMDR
Who do NRVs and ADGs target?
Healthy general population
What are the 5 food groups
Grains and cereals, Vegetables, Fruit, Dairy and alternatives, Meat
NRVs developed?
Set of targets for macro and micro-nutrients that are age, gender specific
Aimed at preventing deficiency’s in general health population
EAR
Estimated Average Requirement
-Daily nutrient level estimated to meet the requirements of half the healthy individuals age and gender specific. 50% of healthy individuals AI,depends on bio maker of deficiency
RDI
Recommended dietary intake (2-3% of AI)
- 2 to 3% of healthy
Australians would have an inadequate intake if they met
the RDI, whereas 97 to 98% will have their needs met.
Based on the EAR x 1.2, or 2 standard deviations to the
right; e.g. this is a higher dose than the EAR
AI
Average Intake(AI)
set for nutrients for which there is
insufficient research data to establish an EAR; lies
somewhere between the RDI and UL. The AI should cover
the needs of more than 97 to 98% of individuals. It is
determined from the median intake of surveyed
apparently healthy populations (per age groups / sex)
EER
Estimated Energy requirement
-Average energy requirement suggested to maintain energy balance
UL
Upper level
- highest nutrient level that is likely to
pose no risks of adverse effects in almost all healthy
individuals. At intakes above the UL, the margin to protect
against adverse effects is reduced. At intakes between
the RDI and UL, the risk of either inadequate diet or
adverse effects from the nutrient is close to 0%. The UL is
set when markers of “toxicity” are known.
SDT
Suggest dietary target
- Daily intake of certain nutrients that may help prevent
chronic disease,
AMDR
Average macro-nutrient distribution range
-Range of intake (a % of total energy requirement) that is
adequate for the intake of macronutrients to maximise
general health outcomes. Only apply to 14 years and
over.
Note: AMDR are determined in order to meet
micronutrients EARs from food only from the core food
groups (not supplements or fortified /super foods etc.), forequity reason mainly. This is not the only way to consume
AMDR ranges?
Ranges
• Fat: 20-35% of total energy requirement/intake.
Saturated and trans-fats together should be limited to
no more than 10% of total energy requirement/intake.
Essential fatty acids recommendations come under the
SDTs (0.2% of requirement/intake for n-3poly
unsaturated fatty acids)
• Protein: 15-25% of total energy requirement/intake.
• Carbohydrate: 45-65% of total energy
requirement/intake, predominant
Dietary Guideline 1
Achieve and maintain a healthy weight,be physically active and choose amounts of nutritious food and drinks to meet energy needs
Dietary Guideline 2
Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from 5 food groups. Drink plenty of water
