any substance, natural or artificial, other than food, that its chemical nature alters structure or function in a living organism

Antecedents (sort of like causes) of Drug Use
aggressiveness, conduct problems, poor academic performance, attachment to a drug-using peer group, parental and community norms in support of, sensation seeking, just being young
Motives for Drug Use
Identification with deviant subculture, rebelliousness, fads & cultural trends, reinforcing properties of drugs, desire to experience an altered state
