Week 1- Diagnoses And Treatment Flashcards
What are the 3 approaches to ‘abnormal behaviour’
Normative approach
Subjective interpretation
Clinics judgements
What is the normative approach to abnormal behaviour
- whether it conforms to societal standards, expectations and norms
- BUT what are the norms ??
What is a limitation to the normative approach
It’s subjective - what are the norms
What is the subjective interpretation to abnormal behaviour
Self judgement if own behaviour is abnormal / needs change
Behaviour may not be culturally abnormal
What is the clinical judgement to abnormal behaviour
Expert judges what behaviour is abnormal-> degree of interference on life work and relationships
Does not rely on societal norms or individual assessments-> but individual may not see the behaviour as abnormal
What are some issues with trying to correctly represent identifiable clinical disorders
- relationship problems
- personal difficulties
- achievement problems
- distressing life events
How can issues with defining abnormal behaviour lead to clinical disorders
May be part of the symptoms which are treated
Abnormal behaviour may reflect adaptation over time
Name the 2 key features of behaviour which helps clinicians make decisions about abnormal behaviours
Sign& symptom (then poss syndrome)
Explain the sign element to the features of abnormal behaviours
- problem/ abnormality observed by clinician
- but patient not ‘perceive this
- objective manifestation of pathological condition (aqa)
- eg bizarre posture in psychosis
Explain the symptom element to the features of abnormal behaviours
- problem/ abnormality perceived by patient
- also relates to patients ‘experience’ of a condition
- subjective manifestation of pathological condition
E.g. Perceived sleep disturbance
Some features can be a sign and symptom- others only a sign or symptoms
Explain why syndrome is being made
Some features can be both a sign and symptom - observed by clinician and patient
Others only a symptom- subjective experiences feelings, mood
Others only a sign- patient may current lack the insight to observe
Explain the syndrome element to the features of abnormal behaviours
