Week 1 Flashcards
Why do we use fabrics?
Lightweight Easy to apply Good lifespan Easily repaired Aesthetically pleasing finishes
Where do we use fabrics?
Classic / Vintage aircraft
Aircraft that are still in production
Flight controls and components
Is fabric cover still relevant?
Yes
What are the parts of the Aircraft that are usually covered with fabric?
Fuselage & Wings
Strongest part of the wing?
Spar
What keeps the spar on place?
Compression Struts
What keeps the ribs in place?
Reinforcing tape
Types of Fabrics
Organic and Synthetic
Why are organic fabrics not used anymore?
Susceptible to humidity change & quickly damaged by UV light
What is PMA?
Parts Manufacturing Approval
Certified fabric products must bear?
Identification Stamp
act as a reinforcement to prevent lacing cord or other fabric attachment devices from pulling through the fabric.
Reinforcing tape
Used to attach fabric to structure of aircraft and to stabilize the ribs prior to attaching the fabric.
Lacing & Chords
Used to gain access to internal parts of structure that have been covered by fabric.
Inspection Rings
Where is the inspection ring located?
located on the bottom surfaces to minimize disruption of airflow over the top.
Used to drain entrapped moisture from inside covered structure.
Drain Grommets
Where is Drain Grommets located?
Located on lower surfaces, at the lowest point.
Used to seal and protect aircraft fabric covering. With organic fabric, it also tightens it.
Dope
used to adhere the fabric edges to the structure of the aircraft when using blanket method. (like glue)
Cements
Thin dope-like substance that contains powerful solvents.
Rejuvenators
