what is shan qi
a collective term describing pain and swelling affecting the lower abdomen, groin and external genitalia - particularly the testes and scrotum; those parts of the body traversed by the liver channel.
Shan qi appears primarily in males due to the peculiarities of the male anatomy.

- swollen, firm cold and retracted scrotum or testicles; in severe cases there is a stone like hardness
- testicular pain that is significantly improved with warmth
- cold intolerance
- white tongue coat; deep wiry pulse

same as repletion cold

Han Shan - Cold Shan
which type of shan qi is characterized by an accumulation of fluid in the scrotum, swollen veins in the scrotum or eczema
Shui Shan - Watery Shan

- scrotum is swollen and edematous, or there is unilateral, well-defined fluid filled swelling & may or may not be painful
- dragging discomfort in testes
- watery splash when the lower abdomen is palpated
- scanty urination
- thin greasy tongue coat

Qi Shan

- scrotum is bilaterally or unilaterally distended and swollen with pain radiating from or to the lower abdomen and/or the lumbar region
- condition is aggravated or initiated by anger, stress or emotional upset and is alleviated by relaxation
- may be other signs of depression, irritability, sighing, headaches, menstrual problems…etc
- pale or normal tongue with white coat
- wiry pulse

- aggravated or initiated by fatigue, overwork, poor appetite, fluid retention and loose stools
- pale and swollen tongue with tooth marks and thin coat
- weak or wiry pulse if there is pain

Hu Shan - Foxy Shan
the following presentation would describe which type of shan qi:
- part of the small intestine intermittently descends into the groin or scrotum through the inguinal canal, disappearing when the patient lies flat or when manually reduced; it appears when a patient stands, coughs or sneezes
- hernia may be large or small, changing from time to time. When present, there may or may not be distention and pain radiating into testes.
- no specific tongue or pulse
