Week 1-2 Flashcards
Define and compare anatomy and physiology and relate them in terms of structure and function
Structure and function are closely related in the body anatomy is the study of the structures while physiology is a study of function and processes form follows function
Describe Carbohydrates
Carbs are made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Their functions are fuel for energy production, structure (cell membrane) and backbone of generic material (DNA and RNA)
What is a monosaccharide
A monomer from which all carbs are made
What is a disaccharide
A unit of 2 monosaccharides formed by dehydration synthesis.
What is a polysaccharide
Many monosaccharides joined by dehydration synthesis
What is glycogen
A storage polymer of glucose; found in skeletal muscle and liver cells
What are lipids
A group of nonpolar hydrophobic molecules made of mostly carbon and hydrogen with a little oxygen
