What is occupation?
Occupation refers to all the activities people engage in or perform for personal or cultural purposes, including self-care, productivity, leisure, play, education, sleep, and social participation. These occupations change throughout life from childhood to old age. (Brown et al., 2021)
How does Occupational Therapy define occupation?
Occupation is everything that people do to occupy themselves, including self-care (looking after themselves), leisure (enjoying life), and productivity (contributing to society and economy). (Polatajko et al., 2007)
What did Molineux (2007) say about occupation?
“Occupation is life itself.” Occupational therapists understand humans, their function, and their need for occupation. (Molineux, 2007)
What did Townsend (1997) say about occupation?
“Occupation is the active process of living: from the beginning to the end of life, our occupations are all the active processes of looking after ourselves and others, enjoying life, and being socially and economically productive.” (Townsend, 1997)
Can you provide examples of occupations in daily life?
Attending university classes

What is occupational performance?
Occupational performance is the ability to choose, organize, and satisfactorily perform meaningful occupations that are culturally defined and age-appropriate, such as self-care, leisure, and productivity, contributing to the emotional, social, and economic fabric of the community. (Law et al., 1997)

Why is occupation important to us?
Occupation is everything we do that brings meaning to our lives. Sometimes we don’t realize its importance until we are unable to do them.

Productivity: Paid and unpaid work
Leisure: Sports, relaxation
Self-care: Food preparation, bathing
