What is developmental psychology
Explores the ways people grow and change across the lifespan, with focus on biological, cognitive, psychological and social functioning.
What do we mean by culture?
It’s often thought of as a set of unwritten rules that govern values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviours among a social group.
Why is culture important?
Culture shapes learned behaviors, influencing emotional expression, non-verbal communication, self-perception, social rules, family structures, time perception, and more.
What is ethnocentrism
It explains how our culture is likely to influence how we view and relate to the world.
What are the developmental domains?
Physical , cognitive, emotional and social development.
What are some features that distinguish homo sapiens from other primates and earlier hominids?
Increased brain size, wider pelvis for the females, longer dependency of infants, use of tools and fire.
When did distint human cultures first develop?
In the paleolithic period around 40,000 years ago
When did first civilization appear?
5000 years ago, people residing in cities, writing, havig specialized occupations, abd centralized political systems
Why does understanding development help us?
to better understand ourselves and those around us, realistic expectations of behaviour and appropriate reactions and underpins professional psychological practice
