Week 1 Flashcards
what is the anatomical position and why is it useful?
upright, feet slightly apart, body facing forward, palms facing forward
allows description of positions and directions of the body
define anatomy and physiology and explain the relationship between them
anatomy- structure/organisation of structures in the body
physiology- functions/processes/interactions of these body parts
what are the 3 planes to divide the body?
saggital plane- divides left and right
transverse plane- divides top and bottom
frontal plane- divides front and back halves
what are the major body cavities and the organs within each?
posterior/dorsal cavity:
- cranial cavity (brain)
- spinal cavity (spinal cord)
anterior/ventral cavity:
- thoracic cavity (lungs, heart, oesophagus, trachea)
- abdominopelvic cavity (abdominal cavity- stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, kidneys/pelvic cavity- bladder, rectum, reproductive organs)
how are organ systems formed?
- atoms combine to form molecules
- cells for tissues (epithelial, connective, muscular, neural)
- two or more types of tissues form organs
- an organ system is two or more organs that work together
why is the body organised into systems?
each system served a unique purpose and collaborate to keep the body functioning
what is homeostasis and how does it maintain health?
homeostasis- state of regulated physiological balance, involves coordination of organ systems to maintain temp, blood pressure, blood sugar, water/sodium levels
maintained in a range by nervous/endocrine systems
