Definitions of knowledge?
Justified true beliefs; or information in action
What is explicit knowledge?
Formal, codified: documents, databases, books etc
What is informal (tacit) knowledge?
Informal, uncodified: values, perspectives, culture, memories
What is categorical/descriptive knowledge?
The most fundamental knowledge, the way we conceptualise the world: categories, concepts, relations
What is explanation knowledge/declarative knowledge?
Teleological explanations, intentions. Cause-effect relationships
What is evaluation/value knowledge?
Goals, preferences, visions: defining what “user friendly” means for example
What is normative/prescriptive knowledge?
Guiding: advice, instructions regarding a phenomenon
What are some paradigms of research?
Positivism, realism, interpretivism, pragmatism
What is positivism?
Objective analyst, researcher is independent.
Complexity in the social reality is reduced to law-like generalisations; emotion is irrelevant
What is realism?
Based on a belief that reality exists independent of human thoughts and beliefs. Shares philosophical aspects of positivism.
What is hermeneutics?
To develop the ability to understand phenomena from another person’s perspective and understand the social forces that affect the situation
What is pragmatism?
Puts the focus on the practical consequences of actions and statements
