  1. Mental Illness is an empirically demonstrable fact - it is not just a difference of perspective
  2. Medical response to mental illness has been and continues to be helpful and curative

HOWEVER

  • Medical responses are also imperfect, unpredictable and spasmodic.
  • Medical responses are culturally significant and politically powerful
