What is the purpose of medication storage?
- Stores medications per pharmaceutical recommendations
- Tracks and monitors removal of medications

What was the purpose of the Controlled Substances Act? When was it introduced?
-establishes the 5 schedules of drugs based on abuse potential
-Developed in 1970
What are the five categories on The controlled substances act? How do they correspond to abuse potential?
- Level 1 has the highest Abuse potential
- Level two has high abuse potential
- Level three has a moderate abuse potential
- Level four has a low abuse potential
- Level five has the lowest abuse potential.
What is a therapeutic use for level one on the controlled substances act?
There is no acceptable use for drugs on level one
Are there any acceptable therapeutic use for drugs on level two of the controlled substances act?
There are some acceptable medical uses for drugs on level two, but they are severely restricted
What is the definition of a controlled substance?
A drug that has a high potential for misuse or abuse
What object can you place in the CSRX (green) container?
-IVs
-Contents of syringes
-Contents of Vials and Ampoules
-Patches
-Pills, Tablets, and Capsules
What can absolutely not go into the CSRX (green) container?
- Syringes, vials, or ampoules
- Any drugs that aren’t controlled substances
What are the regulations when it comes to the red sharps container?
-Can only contain empty syringes or ampoules
-No medications allowed
What is allowed to go into the blue RX waste containers?
- Full or partial IV bags, bottles or vials
- Tablets- whole, broken or partial
- Allowed to contain syringes with medications
What are you have to do if it’s labeled SP?
- Anything labeled SP needs to be returned to the pharmacy for proper disposal
What can be placed into a black 2 gallon sharp container?
- Hazardous medications left in syringes or ampoules
- Include Coumadin/Nicotine packaging
- Tablets- whole, broken or partial
What materials can be placed in the black 8 gallon containers?
- Place items that may leak in a clear ziplock bag prior to disposal
- Include Coumadin/Nicotine packaging into the black container.
- Full or partial IV bags, bottles or vials
- Absolutely no syringes allowed
What is the purpose of black box warnings on medications? Who designates with a black box warning is needed?
- Brings Awareness to serious or life-threatening risks of the medication
- Designated by the FDA
