[WEEK-01] Enquiry-Based Learning Flashcards
What are two strategies used for problem-solving in psychology?
- problem-solving algorithms.
- heuristics.
What are heuristics?
A cognitive shortcut/rule of thumb that finds a relatively quick solution to an event, but it does not guarantee the correct solutions.
What are problem-solving algorithms (simply called algorithms)?
This is a step-by-step procedure that tries every possible solution to a problem until it finds the most correct or effective solution.
What is enquiry-based learning [Wiggins et al, 2016]
This method equips learning with an open ended investigative approach to develop a responsibility for learning, which is “rooted in problem-solving, self-directed learning and group interaction” (pp.139).
What did Barrett, Cashman & Moore (2011) find in terms of enquiry-based learning?
They found that enquiry was prompted by a problem, puzzle, scenario, or case study that was tackled collaboratively.
How did Hung et al, (2008), support enquiry-based learning?
They found that it enhanced knowledge retention and the ability to apply concepts to the real world.
What did Schmidt et al, (2006), find in support of enquiry-based learning?
The method enhanced self-directed learning, planning, and organisation.
How does Dolmans et al, (2005), support enquiry-based learning?
Found it enhanced team-working skills amongst participants.
How does Karantzas et al, (2013), support enquiry-based learning?
Found it improved employability amongst participants.
