Aspirate
Drawing (fluid) by suction from a vessel or cavity
What is supra ventricular tachycardia?
A faster than normal heart rate beginning above the heart’s two lower chambers.
How can you treat supra ventricular tachycardia?
(1) Self Care: Valsalva maneuver - breathing out forcefully while the mouth is closed and the nose is pinched shut.
Vagal maneuver - actions such as gagging, coughing, or massaging the neck to slow down a fast heart rate.
(2) Medications:
Anti arrhythmic agent - helps control abnormal or irregular heart rhythms.
Channel blocker - relaxes blood vessels
When a child complains of pain associated with sickle cell anemia, do NOT…
Use a COLD compress. A cold compress will cause vasoconstriction and limit blood flow.
Sickle Cell
Keep sickle cell patients away from people with infections.
“Who should the nurse see first”…
Determine which patient is MOST unstable
Ethacrynic Acid
Is a loop diuretic (potassium wasting). Encourage patients to eat potassium rich foods including, bananas and oranges
“Requires immediate intervention”
Indicates a complication
The client has a productive cough of pink-tinged sputum (and a history of heart failure)
Indicates fluid in lungs which will decrease respiratory ability.
Preparing a 2 year old for a new sibling
It is OK to wait until 38 weeks to tell a child about the baby. Toddlers have a vague concept of time. Talking to the toddler about being a “big sister” is not age appropriate. Toddler is too young - More appropriate for preschoolers.
A patient with schizophrenia tells the nurse, “someone wants to kill me tonight.” How does the nurse respond?
“It must be frightening to think someone wants to kill you.” (1) Focus on the feelings the delusions generate (2) avoid arguing about the content of the delusion (3) Do not ask why questions (4) Once the patient describes the delusion do not dwell on it
Developmental Milestones in an Infant
(1) Doll’s eye reflex disappears - 2 to 3 months
(2) Begins drooling - 4 months
(3) Responds to his own name - 6 months
(4) Takes deliberate steps when standing - 9 to 10 month
(5) Picks up bite size pieces of cereal - 11 months
Creatine clearance test
Do NOT engage in strenuous exercises during the test. Creatine is a waste product of muscle break down, so it will skew the results. The nurse DOES take blood during the test.
If a client collapses…
FIRST determine responsiveness
Cataract on the eye
Partial or total opacity of the normally transparent crystallin lens. There is a general decrease in the ability of the client to see environment clearly. There is an annoying glare. Pupil changes from black to gray to milky white.
