Tuesday, June 14 Flashcards
Hypothermia Causes
Myocardial Irritability which disrupts conduction system of the heart and causes heart to be near fibrillation threshold (esp Ventricular Fibrillation)
Preschoolers
Need to see and play with things. It’s a time when they have the most fears.
Location: Left Occiput Anterior (LOA)
- Identify mother’s left side
- Vertex is the presenting part with fetal occiput on the mother’s left side toward the front of her pelvis
- Because infant is vertex, FHT is heard below the umbilicus
Limb Amputations
Pain is common after an amputation. Nerve endings often become pinched in the scar tissue. Brain still has the image of the missing limb
Risk Factors for Developing a Stroke
- Race (African American)
- Gender (Male)
- Substance Abuse (especially cocaine)
- Smoking
- Heavy alcohol use
“Teaching is successful” indicates correct information
“Teaching is successful” –> Correct Information
Patient diagnosed with hypertension –> “I will switch from lifting weights to do aerobics”
Regular aerobic exercises are usually recommended / Isotonic exercises such as lifting weights and rowing are contraindicated because they can cause a dangerous rise in blood pressure due to a vasovagal response during intense isotonic muscle contraction / Antihypertensive (and diuretics) can facilitate HYPOtension
Parent calls in to say adolescent is in pain (after a head injury)
Tell parent to contact health care provider. Persistent localized pain suggests a skull fracture and should be evaluated
“Further Treatment is Necessary” (toxic shock)
Determine the outcome of the 4 choices. Is the outcome desired? Or is it undesired?
“Most Concerns” …
Indicates a complication!!
Patient with chronic kidney disease who is on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
Nurse is MOST concerned when the urine is cloudy or opaque because it is the earliest sign of peritonitis
Peritonitis
Peritonitis is an inflammation of the peritoneum, the tissue that lines the inner wall of the abdomen and covers and supports most of your abdominal organs. Typically caused by bacterial infection either via the blood or after rupture of an abdominal organ. **first sign is cloudy or opaque blood.
“RN has been reassigned from postpartum”
Don’t focus on where we was reassigned from. INSTEAD - look at your patients and assign her the one which is most stable!
Raynaud Disease
Form of intermittent arteriole vasoconstriction. Sympathectomy interrupts the sympathetic nerves. *Stable client with a stable outcome.
Client with a history of a heart murmur who has been receiving clozapine for 2 weeks
“I will return to the lab in 1 week to have my WBC count taken.” If WBC count has fallen to BELOW 2,000 the drug will be discontinued.
