weathering the storm Flashcards
social studies
Climate
Refers to average conditions of temperature - 30 or more years - rainfall, wind, or sunshine. We expect climate
Weather
Day to day conditions of the atmosphere. We recieve weather
Latitude
The close to the equator you are, the warmer it is. This is because of the sun ray angles. Temperature tends to decrease with distance from the equator
Altitude
The higher up you go the colder it gets, typically every loom you go you loose 1 degree because theres less atmosphere to retain the sun. Thicker = Warmer
Relief
Differences in height from place to place on the land’s surface
eg Wellington on the cook st
Relief - orographic rainfall
Formed when air is forced to cool when it rises over relief features in the landscape such as hills
Frontal - cyclonic rainfall
Any extra tropical cyclone associated with weather front
Convention
The movement caused by heated air from the earths surface upwards with the water vapour and gets condensed when it reaches a higher altitude
Rainfall process
Air rises - cools - water vapour condenses - perception
Rain shadow
When moisture from the ocean rises up then down the other side causing rain that can be micro climate
Contentinal climate
Colder winters with long lasting snow and shorter growing seasons. No where near the water
Maritime
An oceanic climate with cool summers and winters with low annual temperature and no extreme weather events
Greenhouse affect
The affect is warming the earths surfaces and lower atmosphere caused by substances such as carbon and water vapour which lets the suns energy through to the ground
Global warming
Places with long term warming of the planets overall temperature, it isnt good due to all the fuels
Cold currents
Dry seasons and conditions with cool breeze
