Weathering, Erosion and the Transportation of Rocks Flashcards
Define Weathering
The breakdown of rocks in situ
Define situ
Without movement
Define erosion
The breakdown and removal of material by rivers, sea, glaciers and wind
Name four ways of Erosion
Hydraulic action, Abrasion, Attrition and Solution
Define Hydraulic action
The force of water breaking rock particles away. The river constantly goes into the sides going through tiny cracks breaking rock
Define Abrasion
When rocks scrape and rub against a rock platform. It makes the rock smoother, smaller and rounder
Define Attrition
When rocks picked up smash into each other and break into smaller rounder fragments.
Define Solution (in erosion)
When water dissolves some types of rock
Why two types of rock get affected by solution the most?
Chalk and limestone.
Name four ways rocks can get transported
Traction, Suspension, Saltation and Solution
Define Traction
Large particles like boulders roll along the river bed
Define Suspension
Very light small particles like silt get carried along by the water
Define Saltation
Pebbles bounce along the river bed
Define Solution (in transport)
Soluble materials dissolve and are carried along.
Name two types of erosion
Lateral Erosion and Vertical Erosion
