Erosional and Depositional River Landing Flashcards
Define meander
A bend in the river
At what course do rivers develop meanders?
Middle and lower course
Where occurs on the outside bend?
Erosion
Where occurs on the inside bend?
Deposition
Where is the current slower and why?
Inside bend as the river channel is shallower meaning there is more friction to slow the water down and there is a smaller flow of water so it has less energy. It causes deposition to occur on the inside bend
Where is the current faster and why?
Outside Bend as the river channel is deeper so there is less friction, as well as a larger flow of water to slow down the water. Therefore the current has more energy. It causes erosion on the outside bend
Define current
Flow of the river
Why happens when heavy erosion takes place on the outside bend?
River cliffs can form
When happens when depositing on the inside bend takes place?
Slip - off slopes form
What happens when you down a river meander sequence?
As you
What is a slip off slope?
A deposition of sediment
Define helicoildal flow
The flow of water in a horizontal direction in a corkscrew-like direction. It transfer more material from the river cliff of one meander to the slip-off slope to the next. It is another cause of deposition.
Cause of deposition
Helicoildal flow and slow water current on inside bend
Cause of erosion
Fast current on outside bend.
Define riffles
They are areas of shallow water created by deposition of materials like rocks. They are found on the inside bend
