Q

Prolonged Rainfall

A

Long periods of rainfall can make the soil become saturated. This means further rainfall cannot infiltrate and increases surface runoff. This increases discharge quickly which can cause a flood

Q

Geology - Impermeable Rocks

A

It means water does not percolate into the rocks and flows on the surface through surface runoff meaning the risk of flooding is higher. NOT HIGH DISCHARGE

Relief

A

Steeper slopes means the water reaches the river channel more quickly.

Q

Deforestation

A

Less trees means less interception. Water falls on leaves and then evaporates. It also means less water intake from plants. Deforestation means higher discharge and so flooding is likely.

Q

Buildings / Construction

A

Buildings make from impermeable materials such as concrete and roads results in higher surface runoff . Drains also take water quickly to rivers. This can result in a flood
