Q

what is freeze thaw

A

water freezing and then thawing in a crack causes expansion of the rock, this creates pressure which causes the rock to disintegrate

Q

what is salt weathering

A

when the sea water evaporates salt is left behind to crystallise in the rocks which creates pressure then causes the rocks to disintegrate

Q

what is carbonation

A

rain water is acidic. contact with alkali rocks like chalk/limestone creates a chemical reaction which causes the rocks to dissolve

Q

what is a slide

A

occurs after rain when lose material becomes saturated and the weight causes it to become unstable and rapidly move downhill

what is a rockfall

A

occur on bare rock surfaces that are well jointed and prone to freeze thaw weathering

A

involves a whole segment of a cliff moving down slope along a saturated shear-plane or line of weakness
