Weathering and erosion of rocks Flashcards
Weathering
Base of soil formation. Rocks on earth surface break down: physical processes & chemicals interactions
Rock desintegration: easier transport
Physical weathering
Mechanical process. Disintegration/dislocation of rock into smaller fragments.
Rocks falling down a mountain, root growth in cracks…
Most active in cold zones
Chemical weathering
Elements react with each other influenced by temperature, atmosphere, water, acids.
Formation of rust by oxidation
Most effective in worm tempered tropical areas
May release calcium compunds into soil
Disintegration of massive rock
Increase in the specific surface exposed to weathering.
+ surface area + chemical weathering
Weathering products transport
By water wind ice or gravity: Erosion
Resulting degraded products: sediments
Transported and deposited in lower levels in landscapes: formation of sedimentary rocks
