Minerals Flashcards
Minerals
The building blocks of rocks. Rocks are aggregates of minerals
Composition of minerals & main minerals.
Made up of atoms. Silica. main chemical composition of the rock forming minerals(SiO). Quartz feldspar(light), mica, amphibole, olivine(dark).
Quartz
Consists of Pure Silica (SiO2). Light coloured mineral.
Feldspar
Silicon Oxide, Aluminium, Potasium, Sodium, Calcium (ligh coloured elements)
Micas
Silica, potassium, magnesium, iron.
Amphibole
calcium, sodium, magnesium, iron
Olivine
Silica, magnesium, iron
Plants
Many mineral’s elements essential for plants. Released when rocks weather (soil formation ->available for plants
Crystaline
Regular arrangement of atoms
Amorphous
Atoms do not have a regular order. When atoms do not have enough time to fully organise themselves. (fast solidification)
Mineral
Crystal. Solid with a clearly defined chemical composition. Regular repetitive ordering of its atoms.
Connection between dominant colour of the minerals and element they consist of?
.
What is more difficult to weather into soil, rock consisting of crystalline minerals or amorphous minerals?
