Weathering Flashcards
What causes Weathering?
Mainly wind, water, plants, and ice.
What are the Two Types of Weathering?
Mechanical and Chemical.
What does Weathering do?
It shapes the Earth’s surface.
What is Mechanical Weathering?
Weathering through movement (of things like ice and water).
What is Loess?
An Aeolian sediment formed by the accumulation of wind-blown silt, typically in the 20-50 micrometer size range, twenty percent or less clay and the balance equal parts sand and silt that are loosely cemented by calcium carbonate.
Where is the deepest known Loess in the world?
In Northern China.
Where is Water Erosion the most important?
In the rain forests of Brazil and in South East Asia because of deforestation and the resulting exposure of soil.
How much of the Earth’s surface is covered by ice?
About 10%.
What is Chemical Weathering?
Weathering caused by chemicals such as acid rain or even water. Rocks that melt in water are included in this category.
The ice cap and glaciers cover ___ of the earth’s surface.
10%.
