Weathering Flashcards
What is weathering?
It is the on-site breakdown of rock and its eventual transformation into sediments
What is mechanical weathering?
It is the physical breakdown of rock into unconnected grains/chunks w/o changing its composition
Types of mechanical weathering
- Exfoliation (pressure released)
- Frost wedging
- Root wedging
- Salt wedging
- Thermal expansion
- Burrowing animals
- Human activities

What is chemical weathering?
Occurs when there are chemical changes in at least some of the composition of the rock
Types of chemical weathering
- Dissolution
- Hydrolysis
- Oxidation
- Hydration
- Biological Weathering
Dissolution
Slightly acidic solutions weather the rocks and form pits and holes
Hydrolysis
water REACTS with minerals and breaks it down
Oxidation
Forms oxides when oxygen reacts with minerals in the rock
This process expands certain types of clay where water is ABSORBED into the crystal structure of a mineral
Hydration
What organisms are involved in biological weathering that secrete organic acids to dissolve minerals?
Fungi and Lichen
Compare the rate of which soft rocks and hard rocks weather
Soft rocks weather faster than hard rocks
What are the factors affecting erosion?
gravity and transporting agents like wind, ice, water
The process of separation and removal of weathered and unweathered rocks and soil
Erosion
Where does wind erosion commonly occur?
flat, bare areas or dry, sandy, loose soil
A phenomenon that transports sediments, usually occurring in deserts
Sandstorm
