Weathering Flashcards
Mechanical weathering
Surface area relationship
Mechanic weathering creates more SA for chemical weathering to work on
As mechanical weathering breaks rock into smaller pieces, more surface area is exposed to chemical weathering
Chemical weathering
Alters the internal structures of minerals by removing and adding chemical elements
Water is very important agent of chemical weathering
Pure water is nonreactive but
Typically, need only a small amount of dissolved material for reaction
Spherical weathering
Weathering occurs at exposed surface areas
Eventually an angular block may evolve into a nearly spherical boulder
Differential weathering
Masses of rock, if composed of different minerals do not weather uniformly
