Weathering Flashcards
What is weathering?
Weathering is break down but not the removal of rocks
What is erosion?
Erosion is the removal of piece of the earth’s surface
What is denudation?
Denudation is the laying bare of rocks beneath the surface caused a process of weathering, transport and erosion
What is deposition?
Deposited is the transportation of eroded matterials to another location by running water, wave action and Ice
In what climate does weathering take place faster?
Weathering takes place faster in hot climate zones such as the tropical marine zone.
In what climate does weathering does weathering take place slower?
Weathering takes place slower in cold climate zones such as the Frigid Zone
Define the term climates
Climate is the general weather over a period of time
What is mass wasting and how does it occur?
Mass wasting is the movement of materials such as soil and rock fragments down slope due to gravitational forces. It is influenced by water, rock type and slope angle
How can rock type play a role in weathering?
Rock type can play a role in weathering depending on the rocks structure. If the rock is more soft weathering takes place faster. If the rock is more dense and hard it is more difficult for weathering to take place
What is soil creep?
Soil creep is the slow movement of materials down slope. Soil creep happens faster on steep slops, when there is heavy rainfall, when the regolith is thick.
What rate does soil creep move per year?
Soil creep move 1 millimeter per year downwards in a slope
What are landslides?
Landslides is the downhill movement of mass rock or weathered materials under the influence of gravity.
What conditions are necessary for Landslide to occur?
• Steep Slopes
•Rocks that become slippery such as Shale or clay
• When the base of the slope is undercut by an eroding sea or river.
•Heavy rainfall acts as a lubricant
