Volcanoes Flashcards
What is a Volcano?
A volcano is an opening in the earth’s crust where lava, ashes and gases erupt
What is a sill?
A sill is dried by magma flowing horizontally between two rock layers
What is a dyke?
A dyke is a vertical sheet of igneous formed by magma moving upwards towards the surface
What is a plug?
A plug is created when magma hardens inside a vent of an active volcano
What is a batholith?
A batholth is formed when large rocks of molten hardens below the surface
Where are intrusive features formed ?
Intrusive features are formed by magma beneath the surface.
Where are Extrusive Features formed?
Extrusive features are formed at the earth’s surface
What volcanoes are formed close to Divergent plate boundaries?
Lava Plateaux and Shield Volcano
What volcanoes are found close to convergent plate boundaries?
Volcanic cone
Viscous Lava
Calderas
Where is basic lava found?
Basic lava is found at Divergent plate boundaries
Where is viscous lava found?
Viscous lava is found at convergent plate boundaries.
Name three differences between Basic and Viscous lava.
• Basic lava is found at Divergent plate boundaries whereas viscous lava is found at convergent plate boundaries
•Viscous lava has a high level of silica than Basic lava
•Basic lava is runs faster than viscous because it is more liquidy whereas viscous is thick
