Weather Test - Tuesday Flashcards
climate
- long term weather averages (50 year)
- climate change: change in measurable data over long time
- humans are a huge role in changing climate
F
F = (C • 1.8) + 32
C
C = (F - 32) / 1.8
types of clouds
- cirrus
- stratus
- cumulus
cloud formation
- clouds are formed by condensation of water from a warmer temp. to a cooler temp.
- mixes with dust particles
- not like water droplets on your car or on grass
weather
- weather is the state of atmosphere (life + activities) in short term (min. - 15 days) variations
- measurements: temperature, air pressure and humidity
continental tropical
cT; hot; dry
•moisture evaporates in air
continental polar
cP; cold-cool; dry
•usa winter
•clear weather to usa summer
maritime polar
mP; cool; moist
•cloudy, damp weather
•from northern Atlantic + Pacific
maritime tropical
mT; hot; humid
•warm temps + copious moisture
•usa, southern atlantic and gulf of mexico
continental artic
cA; extreme cold; dry
•extreme cold, little moisture
•originate north of Arctic circle - darkness cools air
•usa + canada winter
cold front
- frigid air + dry frost
- steep slope –> goes under warm air + pushes it up
- boundary between cold + warm air
fronts
boundary between two air masses
warm front
- warm air replaces cold air
- boundary between warm and cold
- warm air rides over heavy cold air
- as warm air rises the vapor forms into clouds –> precipitation
- wet weather can be connected with warm fronts
stationary front
- 2 air masses come together and neither displace each other
- hard to predict weather
- resembles warm front
- complete grid lock/long time storms
occluded front
- cold fronts “catch” warm front
- cold front moves quicker than warm front
- one eating the other
- cold front rotates around warm front
3 measurements of weather
- temperature
- humidity
- air pressure
3 forms of water
•solid •liquid •gas S-L-G (add heat) G-L-S (remove heat)
high pressure system
- atmospheric pressure is higher
- air moves OUT of a h.p.s.
- air circulates clockwise
- curves RIGHT
- High –> Low
- air around is lower
low pressure system
- atmospheric pressure is lower
- air moves INTO a l.p.s.
- air circulates counterclockwise
- all air around is higher
- curves to RIGHT
- High –> Low
Hurricanes
"tropical cyclone" •rotating low pressure system -formed by warm, moist air evaporating + rising then spinning as a l.p.s. •tropical depression: up to 39 mph •tropical storm: 39-74 mph •categories 1-5 start at 74 mph -wind speed
tornados
•form of thunderstorm
•rotating wind funnels down from clouds to the ground
•visible due to condensation of water + dust from clouds and any debris they pick up
•Fujita scale:
f0: 45-78; f1: 79-117; f2: 118-161; f3: 162-209; f4: 210-261; f5: 262-317
tsunami
- “seismic sea waves”
- caused by underwater earthquakes, volcanoes or meteors hitting the water
- visualize a wave pool
- very rare
- 600 mph speed in seep water
- 30 meter average max. height
