Weather Symbols And Tools Flashcards
Air mass
A large body of air with similar properties
Anemometer
Measures wind speed
Hygrometer (hydrometer)
Measures moisture in the air/humidity
Barometer
Measures air pressure
Rain gauge
Measures amount of rainfall
Radar
Measures rain & precipitation inside a storm
Wind vane
Measures wind direction
Maritime polar air
A cold air mass that happens near or in the ocean or a large body of water
Maritime tropical air
A warm air mass that happens near or in the ocean or a large body of water
Continental tropical air
A warm air mass that happens on or around land
Continental polar air
A cold air mass that happens on or around land
Front
The transition between air masses where weather happens and is moved by winds
Cold front
A cold air mass meets and causes a warm air mass to rise
🔹 fast moving
🔹 heavy precipitation
🔹 cooler temperatures
Warm front
A warm air mass meets and overrides a cold air mass
🔹 warm air moves over cold air
🔹 brings long, light drizzles
🔹 warm temperatures
Occluded front
A cold air mass overtakes a slower moving cold air mass and forces cold air up. The cold air keeps going until it meets another.
🔹brings cooler temeratures
🔹brings more precipitation
Stationary Front
Cold air mass meets a warm air mass and results in little or no movement
🔹 drizzles no heavy precipitation
🔹 little movement or moves back and forth over the same area
Climate
The average weather over 30 years
Weather
Whatever is happing in the atmosphere at any given time. It is always changing.
Thermometer
A weather tool used to measure temperature
