Ecosystems
A place where living and non-living things interact.
Community
A place where organisms live together an ecosystem.
Niche
The role each organism plays.
Biotic
Living things in an ecosystem.
Abiotic
Non-living things in an ecosystem.
Environment
All living and nonliving things around an organism.
Population
A species grouping.
Species
All members of the same population.
Adaptation
A structure of behavior that allows a species to survive and reproduce in it’s environment.
Habitat
A place where an organism lives.
Biome
Regions of the world with similar climates, plants and animals
Deciduous forest
They have four seasonsand the average temperature is 50°F. The trees lose their leaves before winter. The animals must be able to survive the changing seasons
Desert
The desert covers about 1/5 of earth. Deserts can be both hot and cold. Plants that live in the desert are great at storing water
Tundra
The coldest biome. It covers about 1/5 of the earth.
Tropical rainforest
Tropical rainforests are located close to the equator. They are wet and warm all year.
Grasslands
The Grassland weather varies greatly. It is cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
Taiga
The taiga is the largest land biome. It usually has long, cold winters and short, mild, wet summers
Producers
A plant that uses the sun to get energy.
Consumer
An animal that uses the producers as their energy.
Carnivore
A type of consumer that eats only meat.
Herbivore
A type of consumer that eats only plants
Omnivore
A type of consumer that eats both meat and plants
Decomposer
An organism that eats dead plants and animals and then puts nutrients back in the ground.
Food chain
A series of organisms that depend on the lower level for nutrients
