Weather Symbols And Tools Flashcards
Air mass
Large bodies with similar properties through it (maritime polar, maritime tropical, continental polar, continental tropical)
Maritime polar air
Maritime polar air is cold and humid
Continental tropical air
Continental tropical air is warm and dry
Continental polar air
Continental polar air is cold and dry
Maritime tropical air
Maritime tropical air is warm and humid
Fronts
Fronts are the boundaries between 2 air masses and they are where weather happens (cold front, warm front, stationary front, occluded front)
Warm front
When a warm air mass meets and over rides a cold air mass. Warm air masses bring long periods of light drizzle. Warm front bring warmer temperatures
Cold front
When a cold air mass meets a warm air mass and causes it to rise. A cold front is fast. It produces thunderstorms heavy rain or snow. A cold front brings cooler temperatures
Anemometer
An anemometer is used to measure wind speed
Hygrometer
A hygrometer is used to measure moisture (humidity) in the air
Barometer
A barometer is used to measure air pressure
Rain gauge
A rain gauge is used to measure to amount of precipitation that fell
Wind vane
A tool used to tell which direction the wind is blowing
Radar
A toll used to measure the wind and precipitation in a storm
Weather
The state of rain, snow, sleet, etc in a small area
